Life aboard Polarstern
Life aboard Polarstern is anything but ordinary, with each day offering new challenges and experiences in the heart of the Arctic.
Unlike a typical 9-to-5 job, Polarstern operates around the clock. The crew works in strict 4-hour shifts to keep the ship running smoothly at all times. But for us scientists, the schedule is much more flexible - dictated not by the clock, but by our research questions, the weather, and the equipment we need to get the job done. Some of us, like myself, work in the quiet hours of the night, while others dive into our work during the day. Shifts are unpredictable, ranging from short bursts of activity to long hours, depending on what needs to be measured or sampled at any given time.
The key to keeping things organized is the daily schedule. Each day, the expedition leaders work closely with the captain to create a plan that balances the needs of the scientists, the crew, and the ship itself. This schedule is created about 12 to 24 hours in advance, taking into account current weather conditions, research goals, and available time to ensure that everyone gets a chance to collect their data. Efficiency is the name of the game, so tasks are often scheduled to overlap to maximize every precious hour in this remote and challenging environment.
But even with meticulous planning, life aboard Polarstern requires flexibility. Arctic weather can change in an instant, and our research depends on being able to adapt. And then there's the matter of rest. With 24 hours of daylight, it's easy to lose track of time and get caught up in the work. That's why it's so important for everyone on board to look out for each other and make sure we're not only working hard, but also sleeping, eating well, and taking care of our own health.
Fortunately, there's no shortage of great food to keep us going. Meals on Polarstern are something everyone looks forward to, especially after a long shift in the cold. Whether you're troubleshooting equipment, processing samples, or just grabbing a cup of coffee between shifts, there's always someone there to lend a hand or a word of encouragement.
In the end, working on Polarstern is more than just a job - it is an adventure. Every day is different, and every task brings us one step closer to understanding the mysteries of the Arctic. It's a place where science meets teamwork, and where each of us plays a critical role in the success of the mission. And as the icebreaker moves steadily through the frozen sea, you realize how special it is to be part of something so extraordinary. Join us as we embark on this extraordinary expedition. We can't wait to share more with you soon!
